Niseko Alternatives: Where to Find Uncrowded Powder in Hokkaido
Niseko is famous for good reason, but on a powder morning its lifts get busy. If you want deep snow without the crowds, look inland to central Hokkaido, around Daisetsuzan National Park. Here are the ski areas we recommend near Kamikawa, how they differ, and how to plan a trip around them.

Why central Hokkaido stays quiet
Most international skiers fly into New Chitose and head straight to Niseko, Rusutsu or Furano. The Daisetsuzan area is farther from Sapporo, has few large resort hotels, and is mostly known to locals and powder hunters. Being inland, it also tends to be colder, so the snow is often light and dry.
Kurodake: our home mountain
Kurodake rises directly above Sounkyo Onsen, a hot-spring town in Kamikawa. A ropeway and a single pair lift are the only infrastructure. There is no grooming and no snowmaking, so you ride whatever the sky delivers. A one-day pass was ¥5,200 including the ropeway in the 2025–26 season, and the season runs from December into early May.

Asahidake: backcountry on Hokkaido's highest peak
Asahidake (2,291 m) is the highest mountain in Hokkaido. In winter, a ropeway takes you up the volcano, and the terrain below is closer to backcountry than to a resort: no groomed runs, open bowls and tree lines. It is for experienced riders only. Go with a certified local guide, carry avalanche gear, and check conditions, because weather on the upper mountain changes fast.
For families and beginners
If you are travelling with children or are still learning, deep ungroomed snow can be hard work. Kamui Ski Links in Asahikawa is the largest ski area in the Kamikawa region and has groomed runs with good snow. Canmore Ski Village in Higashikawa, about 15 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport, is a small, relaxed local hill. One of our guests, a 7-year-old girl from Martinique, tried skiing for the very first time at a nearby ski area, with our host guiding and interpreting.
How to plan your trip
Base yourself in Kamikawa. Kurodake is 25 minutes away by bus, Asahikawa Airport about an hour by car, and you can end every day in a Sounkyo onsen. To avoid even the small crowds, ride on weekdays and go early on powder mornings. If you want someone to pick the best mountain for each day's snow and drive you there, join Snow Crew, MOTO's 5-day guided program. If you want to stay longer, work and ride, see our remote work page.
FAQ
What is the best alternative to Niseko for powder?

January and February are typically the coldest months with the most consistent powder. Kurodake's season continues into early May for spring skiing.
