The MOTO Coliving house in Kamikawa, Hokkaido

Vision

A Living Lab for
Joyful Living.

Our Story

The word "moto" means "fire/flame" in Swahili, East African local language. When founder Ayaka was working in Africa, the vision of MOTO Coliving was born from a simple realization: we humans are also part of the natural world.

Surrounded by mountains, rivers, and vast forests, MOTO invites you to slow down, to live close to nature, to play in it, and to rediscover what truly matters.

We hope everyone's soul of fire (= moto) will be ignited brightly and spread from here to the world.

Philosophy

Sustainable Living in Practice.

At MOTO, "sustainability" isn't just an idea, it's part of daily life and fun. We live lightly with the land and take small steps to care for the planet: composting food waste, upcycling materials, reducing energy use, and creating together with what nature already offers.

Our goal is awareness, not perfection. To learn to live in balance, to share resources, and to preserve for the next generation. Human creativity is what makes these practices joyful, turning sustainability into a way of living.

IKIGAI / 生き甲斐

What gives your
life purpose?

"IKIGAI / 生き甲斐" is a Japanese philosophical term that comes from two words, IKI meaning "to live," and GAI meaning "value." It describes what gives your life purpose, a sense of being truly alive.

At MOTO, surrounded by nature and local community, you can explore your own ikigai through daily living.
